Annual Youth Contest
Youth Tour Participants

Each year, EnergyUnited conducts a Youth Contest, a program that selects six winners to participate in one of two summer enrichment events, the Rural Electric Youth Tour (application PDFclick here to apply for the Washington 2008 Youth Tour) and the Cooperative Leadership Camp. The Rural Electric Youth Tour for 2008 is to Washington D.C. (application PDFclick here for the Washington 2008 Youth Tour Brochure). Participants of the Youth Tour who are eligible could be awarded the Gwyn B.Price and Katie Bunch Memorial Youth Tour Scholarships (application PDFclick here for the Youth Tour Scholarships Brochure). The contest is open to all high school juniors in the 19-county EnergyUnited electric service area. Participants must complete an application form and write a brief essay in order to be considered for the contest. Finalists are invited to an interview where an independent panel of judges makes the final selections.

RULES AND REGULATIONS:
To be eligible for the Electric Cooperative Youth Tour, the following provisions will govern the acceptance of applicants from the local cooperatives:
1. Applicants must have completed their junior year in high school, and be enrolled for their senior year at the time of the trip.
2. Applications must be a resident of a county served by EnergyUnited: Alexander, Cabarrus, Caldwell, Catawba, Davidson, Davie, Forsyth, Gaston, Guilford, Iredell, Lincoln, Mecklenburg, Montgomery, Randolph, Rockingham, Rowan, Stokes, Wilkes, and Yadkin. Applicant does not have to receive electric service from EnergyUnited.
3. Applications and essays must be completed and sent to EnergyUnited no later than Friday, March 14, 2008.

ESSAY TOPICS:
Please choose one topic and write a 250 to 500 word typed essay on a separate piece of paper. Do not include your name or contact information on the essay. Feel free to add personal interests tied to politics, history, travel, etc.

1.What are the basic differences between cooperatives and other forms of business?
2.What are the pros and cons of renewable energy sources vs. nuclear and coal power?
3.What new or different source(s) of energy could we see in the future?
4. In terms of personal development, what is your greatest strength and how has it enhanced your life?
5.What issue interests you most about our government process and why?
6. Of all the political leaders in our Nation, past or present, who has influenced you most and why?

All qualified applicants who meet these criteria will be invited to an interview in Mocksville in late March or early April. From this group, five students will be selected to participate in the youth leadership conferences in Washington, D.C. or Asheville. Applications and essays must be mailed to:
